GCSO Conducts "Operation Verification" (Sex Offender Roundup, 3-2-2019)

Post Date:03/02/2019 2:00 PM

Official Press Release
For Immediate Release

Sheriff D. H. Rogers reports the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office conducted an operation involving over 35 Sheriff’s Office personnel in which registered sex offender addresses were verified.  Also, service of several “Child Support” warrants were attempted on persons who have been found in contempt of court for failure to pay and/or failed to appear for a court hearing.

G.S. 14-208.7 mandates that a person who has a reportable conviction is required to maintain registration with the sheriff of the county where the person resides. “Initial registration” requires in person registration.  In compliance with G.S. 14-208.8, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office maintains an active registry of all sex offenders within the county.  The Staff Duty Section of the Sheriff’s Office maintains this information.

During the period that an offender is required to be registered under North Carolina law, the sheriff is authorized to attempt to verify that the offender continues to reside at the last reported address.  Sheriff Rogers and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office have chosen to take a proactive stance in regards to this provision to ensure the safety of citizens and the compliance of offenders.

The North Carolina Sex Offender Registry website, http://sexoffender.ncsbi.gov/stats.aspx, shows 868 registered (non-incarcerated) offenders living in Guilford County.  While the majority of offenders are in compliance with statutory requirements, there are those who refuse or fail to comply and are in violation of the law. Offenders who are found to be out of compliance with North Carolina General Statues will face felony charges.

During the operation, approximately 280 offender addresses were verified.  Twenty-eight offenders were found to be out of compliance and two offenders were arrested for outstanding warrants.  Another subject was arrested for two counts of identity theft, obtaining property by false pretense, driving while license revoked, possession of drug paraphernalia and misdemeanor drug possession.
