A Happy & Green Holiday
It’s that time of year when we start shopping for the holidays. While this time of year can be filled with thankfulness and celebration, it can also contribute to an excess of waste if we’re not cautious.
Don't worry; being environmentally conscious doesn't have to mean sacrificing the holiday spirit. You can use various methods to help reduce, reuse, and recycle while also helping the environment during the holiday shopping season. The following advice can help you have a happy and green holiday season:
1. Pick your wrapping paper carefully
Since most wrapping paper is not recyclable and ends up in landfills, it is one of the main contributors to holiday waste. Look for wrapping paper that is recyclable and made of recycled resources. Try not to purchase anything with a material that is flocked, glittery, or shiny since they are not recyclable and are often covered in metal or plastic. Additionally, you can recycle wrapping paper from past years or use substitutes like brown paper bags, newspapers, or magazines. Use organic materials like pinecones, evergreen sprigs, or dried flowers to add a unique touch to your presents.
2. Recycle your cardboard containers and Styrofoam.
Despite its convenience, online purchasing produces a significant amount of cardboard trash. Recycle the cardboard boxes and wrapping materials from your online gift orders. Additionally, you can reuse boxes to ship your own gifts. Be sure to flatten the boxes and remove any labels, tape, or plastic inserts before recycling.
3. Make local and sustainable purchases
Another strategy to cut waste and help the environment is to shop locally and sustainably. Select presents that are manufactured from sustainable materials, such as hemp, bamboo, organic cotton, or recycled plastic Choose products with compostable or biodegradable packaging or with little to no packaging. Additionally, you can locate one-of-a-kind, handcrafted presents that support your community and lessen your carbon footprint by shopping at local shops, farmers' markets, or craft fairs.
Happy Holidays!
