On July 16, 2022, people across the U.S. will have access to a new three digit dialing code, 9-8-8, to call when they or someone they know is experiencing a mental or behavioral health crisis.
9-8-8 is short and easy to remember. Dialing 9-8-8 from anywhere in the United States connects you to compassionate, accessible support for people experiencing mental health related concerns, including thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress.
People can dial 9-8-8 for themselves or for someone they know who may need crisis support.
9-8-8 is accessible. People can call or text 9-8-8, it is fully accessible for people of all abilities, and it includes a Spanish-language option as well as interpretation service in more than 150 languages.
9-8-8 is additive. North Carolina already participates in the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Veterans Crisis Line — 800-273-TALK. That number will remain active and starting in July, that same crisis line will be reachable by dialing 9-8-8. The Guilford County Behavioral Health Urgent Care is also available by calling (336) 890-2700, or by visiting 931 Third St. in Greensboro any time. No appointment is needed and the facility is open 24/7.
9-8-8 is needed. In 2020, the U.S. had one death by suicide every 11 minutes. Suicide is a leading cause of death for people aged 10-34 years.
