Guilford County was awarded $10,000 through the Community Recycling and Waste Reduction Grant from the North Carolina Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service (NCDEACS). The grant was a collaborative effort between the Planning & Development Department Environmental Services Division and the Facilities Department Parks Division to provide recycling bins for County Parks.
The Parks are trying to make recycling easy for park visitors and encourages all visitors to take advantage of the new recycling containers. The grant enabled Parks to place recycling in the five active parks: Bur-Mil Park, Gibson Park, Hagan-Stone Park, Northeast Park and Southwest Park. "We are committed to making recycling a permanent part of the Guilford County Park experience," said Dwight Godwin, Parks Operations Manager. “Recycling conserves resources, saves energy and valuable space in our landfills.”
Both permanent bins and movable temporary bins will be utilized around high-volume areas such as sports fields, swimming pools, picnic shelters at special events. The grant project aims to divert seven tons of recyclables from the waste stream in the first year of implementation and help make recycling a regular part of Guilford County culture.
Visitors can recycle their plastic and metal drink containers, but household recycling is not accepted at the parks.
