Guilford CARES Feeding the Community Food Drive Launches February 6th

Guilford County Demonstrates Community Spirit to Help Feed Less Fortunate

Post Date:02/04/2021 9:10 AM

Guilford County elected leaders have partnered with ten local churches and nonprofit organizations to help feed those who are less fortunate within our community. The program will begin this Saturday, February 6, 2021 at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church located at 408 Martin Luther King Jr Drive, Greensboro.

Each box of food is designed to feed a family of four. The goal of The Guilford CARES; Feeding the Community Food Drive is to distribute 500 boxes of food bi-weekly for 10 weeks totaling 5000 boxes from different alternating locations throughout the county. Each box will include enough food for two weeks and include meat and fresh produce.

Funding for this program comes from the county’s COVID response initiatives approved by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners during their December 14, 2020 meeting. The Board set aside nearly $300,000 from federal funds received for this initiative at the request of Commissioner Carolyn Coleman to help address food insecurities.

“The Guilford County Board of Commissioners is extremely proud to announce the second part of this food give away, which consist entirely of funds set aside to address food insecurities,” said Carolyn Coleman, Guilford County Commissioner – District 7. “The Board felt strongly that we should use these funds to help our constituents during this very challenging time. We are very pleased with the overwhelming support from our community churches and nonprofit organizations, which will shoulder the responsibility of distributing these food boxes to the Guilford County community throughout the winter.”

The churches and nonprofit organizations participating as distribution locations include:

  • New Zion Missionary Baptist Church
  • Hayes Taylor YMCA
  • Shiloh Baptist Church
  • Calvary Baptist Church (High Point)
  • First Baptist Church (Greensboro)
  • Lawndale Baptist Church
  • Second Harvest Food Pantry (Greensboro/High Point)
  • Open Door Ministries (High Point)

The Guilford CARES Feeding the Community Food Drive comes at a critical time when food drive donations are running extremely low in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and more than 90,000 people countywide suffer from food insecurities.
