North Carolina law requires all middle school students in the local school system to receive a prescribed set of immunizations before entering the 7th grade. To help local parents take care of this requirement before entry deadlines this fall, Guilford County Public Health is pleased to offer immunizations in April 2019 in all Guilford County middle schools. We will have available the Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) and Meningococcal (MCV) vaccines for 6th grade students. Tdap vaccine can protect adolescents and adults from three diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. Meningococcal disease is a serious illness that is caused by bacteria that can lead to infections of the brain, spinal cord and blood. Meningococcal disease often occurs rapidly and without warning. Meningococcal vaccine helps protect against four different strains of this bacteria. Students need both of these shots to meet the immunization requirements for 7th grader entry in North Carolina. The schools sent permission forms to parents in February. The Health Department will review each form returned by parents to determine if any fees will be required for students to receive these immunizations at school.
